The Renaissance of Real

The truth in all its forms:

As we reclaim authenticity in how we live, dress, and design, there's room for not only quiet minimalism and grounded tradition, but also for emotion, play, and unapologetic self-expression.

This is where Expressionism enters the conversation.

If Preserve honors heritage and Bare finds meaning in simplicity, Expressionism celebrates the human impulse to experiment, layer, and personalize. It reflects a world where individuality matters again — where homes become canvases, not showrooms, and design becomes a language for identity rather than perfection.

Expressionism is the Renaissance of Real at full Volume.Joyful. Imperfect. Personal. And very much alive.

Next, we'll explore how this expressive energy is shaping interiors — through color, pattern, and fearless creativity.

EXPRESSIONISM

Design that refuses to whisper.

Expressionism is where curiosity runs free — a dance of color, form, and feeling. It's a home alive with novelty, where cherished keepsakes mingle with bold idscoveries, and every corner tells a story only the inhabitant could write. Like a living collage of memory, this aesthetic invites the inner child to play alongside the seasoned collector, creating spaces that are layered, imperfect, and joyfully personal.

A renewed connection to the inner child is shaping how we desgin and live. Homes become playgrounds for the imagination, where bold color meets curious form, and whimsy isn't just allowed — it's essential. Expressionism embraces the beauty of experimentation, encouraging interiors that feel expressive rather than curated, emotional rather than restrained.

In times of uncertainty, individuality becomes a form of strength. Consumers are turning away from the generic and reaching for pieces that speak in their own language — objects with stories, humor, and soul. The home becomes a mirror of the self, unapologetic in its originality and rich with meaning.

Unbound by seasonal dictates or prescriptive rules, Expressionism is trend-agnostic at its core. It rejects the fleeting nature of "what's in" and instead honors what feels true. This is design guided by instinct, memory, and emotion — a celebration of personal truth, boldly lived.

This is design as identity.

This is creativity without permission.

This is Expressionism.

What’s Driving the Shift Toward Expressionism?

In a world increasingly shaped by algorithms, optimization, and visual sameness, individuality has become the ultimate luxury. Consumers are pushing back against uniformity, gravitating toward products, spaces, and experiences that reflect their personal point of view rather than a prescribed ideal.

This desire for distinction is reshaping how brands and individuals approach design. Rather than chasing trends, there's a growing emphasis on clarity of identity —knowing who you are and expressing it unapologetically. As market volatility and cultural uncertainty intensify, authenticity becomes a source of strength. Brands and consumers alike are finding resilience in leaning into what makes them different, not what makes them blend in.

Expressionism thrives in this space. It celebrates self definition over conformity and embraces creativity as a form of personal agency.

How It Shows Up in the Home

Within the home, Expressionism reveals itself through eclectic, story-rich interiors. Spaces are layered with personal mementos, one-of-a-kind art, playful objects, and unexpected finds. Each piece holds meaning — a souvenir from a journey, a vintage tresure, a bold artwork that sparks joy. Together, they form a visual narrative that feels nostalgic, eccentric, and deeply personal.

The home becomes a canvas for escapism and imagination — a place where fantasy is welcomed and individuality is on full display. Connection often centers aroundentertaining in expressive environments: colorful rooms, whimsical decor, and settings that invite laughter, conversation, and a sense of childlike play.

Expressionism transforms the home into more than a backdrop for daily life.

It becomes a living, evolving reflection of the self — vibrant, layered, and joyfully human.

Vitality

Vitality is where materiality breaks free from convention. It's about crafting outside the lines — experimenting, layering, and embracing the unexpected to spark bold creative discovery. Surfaces become expressive canvases, rich with detail, contrast, and personality.

This approach celebrates materials not just for what they are, but for what they can become when intuition leads the process. Unusual pairings, playful finishes, and expressive constructions redefine familiar materials, inviting surprise and delight at every turn.

Why It Matters

Breaking boundaries across materials and surfaces opens the door to new forms of expression. Buidling on the momentum of our SS 26 Materials Shift: Eclectic Decadence, designers and suppliers are pushing past tradition — rethinking construction, embellishment, and even material application itself.

The goal isn't novelty for novelty's sake. It's discovery. A search for fresh creative frontiers where craftsmanship feels alive, exploratory, and emotionally charged. In this space, materials don't behave — they perform.

Vitality fuels Expressionism with energy, curiosity, and fearless imagination — reminding us that design thrives when rules are questioned and creativity is given room to roam.

Application

Long-standing craft practices meet modern artistic vision in collections rich with character and personality. Familiar materials — brushed mohair, boldly colored leathers, expressive jacquards — are reimagined for upholstery and statement furniture, gaining renewed relevance through color, scale, and texture.

Soft goods take on vibrant, tactile life through novelty stitches, playful yarn slubs, and layered constructions that invite touch. Fearless combinations of texture, weight, and material application define the look, creating interiors that feel youthful, curious, and alive.

Color plays a starring role: saturated hues, unexpected pairings, and painterly contrasts infuse warmth and individuality. Finishes follow suit — high-sheen accents, polished surfaces, and glossy highlights underscore Expressionism’s celebration of artistry, experimentation, and joy.

The result is a dynamic, modern approach to living spaces — one where materials don’t just support design, they express it.

Boundless Craft

Boundless Craft embraces imperfection as an art form. Messy, layered, and joyfully unrestrained, this direction pulls inspiration from hands-on techniques like embroidery, tufting, appliqué, painting, and collage — where spontaneity leads and rules fall away.

These patterns feel assembled rather than designed, celebrating the beauty of process and personal mark-making. Off-cuts from previous seasons, mismatched materials, and unexpected combinations are not only welcomed but encouraged, giving new life to what already exists. It’s sustainability through creativity — reuse as reinvention.

There are no boundaries here. Color clashes freely, scales collide, textures overlap. Dimensions shift. Motifs feel improvised, almost childlike in spirit yet deeply intentional in execution. The result is a visual language that feels alive — imperfect, expressive, and unmistakably human.

Boundless Craft is about freedom: freedom to play, to experiment, to tell your own story through pattern. It’s maximalism driven not by excess, but by emotion — where every stitch, scrap, and stroke becomes part of a larger, deeply personal composition.

Pattern Frenzy

Where rules dissolve and expression takes over.

Pattern Frenzy lives at the intersection of craft and bohemian spirit — a place where clashing prints coexist in bold, intentional harmony. This approach embraces visual excess as language of self-expression, weaving together a patchwork of memories, references, and nostalgic echoes.

Rather than centering on a single motif, Pattern Frenzy is about the use of print itself. Florals collide with geometrics. Stripes interrupt painterly forms. Scales, eras, and styles overlap freely. There are no fixed rules for color of composition — in fact, resisting expectation is the point.

The aesthetic looks backward only to move forward, pulling from design predecssors and reworking them trough a contemporary, personal lens. Maximalism reighns here: unexpected shapes, layered accent pieces, and the joyful chaoss of mized patterns create spaces that feel alive, animated, and unapologetically individual.

Pattern Frenzy isn't about perfection — it's about personality. A celebration of print as play, memory, and rebellion all at once.

Dynamic Flow

Movement, reimagined.

Dynamic Flow reinvents the classic stripe through the lens of freedom and motion. For FW 26/27, stripes looksen their grip on structure, transforming into fluid, expressive gestures that feel alive with energy. These patterns evoke movement — not rigid repetition — but rhythm, flow, and spontaneity.

Clever color pairings and smooth tonal transitions give these stripes dimensionality and depth, allowing them to oscillate between harmony and playfulness. There's a sense of momentum here, where lines bend, blur, and dance across the surface rather than standing still. The effect is amplified when applied to densely brushed or tactile fabrics, where softness enhances the visual motion and brings the print fully to life. Painterly strokes, optical illusions, wavy repeats, and exaggerated proportions further push the narrative, aligning with Expressionism's embrace of bold silhouettes and emotional design.

For a more restrained interpretation, tonal colorways offer a quieter expression — still dynamic, but softened.

Dynamic Flow captures the joy of movement — expressive, unrestrained and endlessly alive.

Expression as a Way of Living

Expressionism reminds us that home is not meant to be neutral. It's meant to bealive. A place where color, memory, and imagination coexist — where the personal is celebrated and individuality is visible in every layer.

In a world that often asks us to blend in, Expressionsim gives permission to stand out. To collect boldly. To mix eras, textures, and stories without apology. It reframes maximalism not as excess, but as intention amplified — a reflection of who we are, where we've been, and what brings us joy.

This is the Renaissance of Real at its most playful: authenticity expressed through curiousity, craft, and fearless creativity.

Next week, we dive into Drench — the most immersive expression of the season. If Expressionism is a joyful collage, Drench is a deep exhale into intensity — where one feeling fills the room completely.

Prepare to be consumed.
