Le Chat Noir

Harry Armstrong

Updated: Aug 20, 2021

A cabaret in the 1880s opened up in Montmortre, a district in Paris, France. It was said to be the first modern establishment to bring in guests where they would sit around a table and drink while being entertained by a show on stage.

Le Chat Noir would be a popular hangout spot for writers and artists during the 1880s up until 1897 when it closed. In the cabaret's early days, musicians, poets, writers, and artist would preform on stage. The entertainment quickly changed to a very early version of motion picture called shadow plays.

This 1886 poster, by Théophile Steinlen, was used as advertisement for the cabaret's set entertainers that would go on tour to different French speaking cities.

Now it is seen in hotels, cafes, your girlfriends boho styled apartment, or printed on your moms favorite throw pillow - the one she spilt wine on and will never throw away.

Curiosity brought you to this page and inspiration brought me to illustrate this poster for Harry's Room. Notice the use of similar colors, objects, and motifs. 🐈‍⬛
