Embracing Art in the Home: A Journey Through Time

Harry Armstrong

Art is a timeless presence in our homes, an element that transcends trends and remains a constant in our living spaces.

It's been a year since I moved back into my parents' house. As I approach 30, I’ve witnessed our living room and kitchen undergo two paint jobs since we first moved in back in 2001. I often offer my mom design advice, but like many immigrants, she has a wonderful stubbornness. Despite her lack of formal education in interior design, she has an incredible intuition for interior decorating. Her knack for composition and coordination is truly impressive.

Growing up, I remember my mom ordering catalogs filled with paintings of gardens and still lifes, predominantly Western art. She didn't just browse these catalogs; she carefully selected and framed a few pieces, adorning our walls with them. The sophistication she displayed was remarkable.

However, over the past decade or so, her style has shifted to a more contemporary aesthetic. The walls now feature art purchased from Marshalls or city home stores, complete with phrases like "Live Laugh Love" and "Hakuna Matata" mounted alongside paintings of small figurines of a boy and girl on a mahogany grand piano with a gilded frame.

Yet, those original prints have stood the test of time, still hanging proudly after 20 years. During my childhood, my own school-made art also found a place on our walls, and those pieces that survived the years now reside in the laundry room, a testament to their enduring charm.

Art, in its many forms, continues to tell the story of our homes and our lives. It evolves with us, reflecting our tastes and experiences while maintaining a thread of continuity. Whether it’s the classic prints my mom adored or the contemporary pieces she favors now, each work of art contributes to the unique tapestry of our home.

As individuals who value quality, creativity, and sustainability, I know you appreciate how art and design enrich our living spaces. Let’s continue to celebrate the beauty and craftsmanship that make our homes truly special.
